Lucas Tavern, Montgomery
The historic Lucas Tavern in Montgomery, Alabama, is said to be haunted by the friendly ghost of one of its early owners, Eliza Lucas. The tavern is preserved as part of the Old Alabama Town historical collection. The spirit of Eliza Lucas is the most famous paranormal presence associated with the tavern. She has reportedly been seen standing in the doorway or at a window of the 19th-century building. Her apparition is consistently described as a friendly one, with witnesses saying she smiles and waves at those who pass by. The tavern is now a part of Old Alabama Town, but it was originally built around 1818 near Line Creek along the Federal Road, a major travel route connecting Washington D.C. and New Orleans. Taverns like this provided food, shelter, and drinks to travelers passing through the area. Lucas Tavern was known for its exceptional hospitality and was once considered the "most celebrated inn on the Federal Road". The building was moved to Old Alabama Town in 1978 and restored, opening to the public in 1980.
